How to load a kiln for a glaze firing
In this short series, we will explore how we load our 100l kiln Nora for a glaze firing. Loading a glaze kiln requires a few steps: you need to make sure that glazed pieces do not touch (otherwise the glass will melt and stick together), and you need to make sure that the work fits under the stilts. Loading a kiln means working in layers and we always try to make sure the kiln is as full as we can to avoid wasting electricity.
In the first video we show you:
- How to structure a layer and use stilts
- Ensuring you maintain proper distance between the pieces on a layer and the pieces and the kiln walls and stilts
- Filling the gaps
In the second video we show you:
- How to add further kiln shelves
- How to position stilts so that the kiln shelves are stable
- How to safely fill out the top (last layer)
